Pro Lift Helps Install Boulder’s Latest Art Commission: 55 Degrees

55 Degrees, by Adam Kuby, is Boulder’s newest art installation located in the Civic Area on Canyon Blvd, just west of Broadway. The artwork is the first large-scale public art commissioned through the Public Art Policy. It consists of three large steel sculptures tilted at 55 degrees, a reference to the iconic Boulder Flatirons which generally angle at 55 degrees. The sculptures function as interactive windows that (depending on the position of the viewer) can frame the sky, mountains, or the park itself.

The large steel sculptures were fabricated by Living Design Studios in Erie, then transported and lifted into place by Pro Lift Crane. Transporting the 19’ wide was no small feat. They required special permits and a route that had to be surveyed and approved by the city of Boulder and the state of Colorado. Pro Lift Crane worked with APEX Transportations to move the sculptures. The transport started at 3am and required two trucks and two pilot cars for each truck.

The installation was done in a single day. The sculptures required special rigging so they could be lifted at exactly 55 degrees to be lowered correctly onto the mounting bolts. See the photo gallery of the installation process below:
